Somalia and its partners agree to step up war on al-Shabaab

Somali government and its partners have agreed to rump up operations against al-Shabaab fighters in Somalia.

In a meeting held in Mogadishu, Somali Prime minister, Hassan Ali Kheire and international envoys in Somalia have discussed on wide range issues including security and strengthening Somalia’s governance.

PM Kheire has stated his government commitment to improve security and governance.

According to a statement by the office of the PM, the sides talked about operations against al-Shabaab fighters in the country.

Somali authorities have vowed that the Federal Government in cooperation with the member states to intensify operations to liberate areas controlled by al-Shabaab.

The leaders of Hirshabelle and Southwest states have jointly emphasized the importance to liberate al-Shabaab controlled areas in the regional states.

The development comes less than a week after Somali military repelled attacks by al-Shabaab on several bases in Lower Shabelle region.

Heavily armed al-Shabaab fighters had attacked on bases in Qoryooley and Aw-dhegle towns.

According to military officials, Somali forces killed nine al-Shabaab fighters.
