Ethiopia’s first envoy in 20 years assumes office in Asmara

Ethiopia’s new ambassador to Eritrea, Redwan Hussein has handed over his credential to Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki.

Eritrean Minister of Information, Yemane G. Meskel said President Isaias received the credential of Redwan on Wednesday.

Redwan was appointed Ethiopia’s envoy in July 2018 following the rapprochement between the two countries after 20 years of no-peace, no-war status.

Redwan who was serving as Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Ireland had also previously a Minister at Ethiopia Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Last year, the two countries signed an agreement in Asmara to restore ties as the Eritrean and Ethiopian leaders moved swiftly to sweep away two decades of hostility.

Ethiopia and Eritrea fought a bloody two-year border war from 1998-2000, that killed an estimated 70,000 people from both sides.

The war was ended by a December 2000 Algiers peace agreement, but it left the two countries in a state of a bitter armed standoff.
