United Nations (UN) has called for elections to hold in 2020 in Somaliland of northern Somalia.
Speaking to the media in Hargeisa town, UN Special envoy to Somalia James Swan has urged Somaliland administration to make sure elections to take in the region despite delay previously announced.
Last November, the region’s parliament has unanimously agreed elections to be delayed.
Swan said democratically elections to elect the lawmakers of the region should be organised and hold this years in order to iron concerns expressed by many.
“We encourage rapid progress to complete all necessary steps for Somaliland to hold parliamentary elections in 2020. We welcome the inter-party dialogue and urge implementation of the recent agreements that would enable preparations for elections to be held in 2020,” said Swan.
