African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) have thwarted attempts by the Al-Shabaab fighters to attack its base in Lower Shabelle region.
According to sources, dozens of Shabaab fighters have attacked the base in Bufow-Bacaad village from different sides.
Locals confirmed deaths of two civilians who were killed by a stray bullets.
Military officials in Marka town said the group retreated after incurring losses and injures in an attempt to attack the base.
The officials have not commented on the casualties on AMISOM troops.
The attack comes barely two weeks after Somali forces killed eight Al-Shabaab fighters and injured over 10 others following fierce fighting in Marka town.
The commander of the 4th Battalion of the 14 October Brigade, Osman Mohamed Muse told the media the forces repulsed an attempt by Al-Shabaab on the town leading to heavy clashes but his forces managed to push away the militants inflicting casualties.
The military man said they had received intelligence about a planned attack by the militants and were ready for a counter-attack. He noted the forces were on standby and managed to respond effectively.
Somali forces have intensified offensives in recent weeks against Al-Shabaab in the Lower Shabelle and
Middle Jubba regions wresting control of villages previously under Al-Shabaab grip.
