Turkey’s parliament this week approved an extension of Turkish forces serving in the Gulf of Aden, Somalia and the Arabian Sea.
Turkish forces in in the Gulf of Aden will continue to halt piracy for another year.
Parliament ratified a motion extending the authorization of the deployment until Feb. 10, 2021.
Parliament’s approval of a government motion will go into force on tenth of this month. Accordingly, the Naval Forces’ mission has been extended for one more year from Feb. 10, 2016.
Showing the importance it attaches to international cooperation in the fight against piracy,
Turkey has deployed a frigate in the area since 2008.
Turkey has also contributed financially to a trust fund established by “the Contact Group on Piracy off the Coast of Somalia (CGPCS).”
The Arabian Sea and the Horn of Africa country of Somalia are adjacent to the gulf and the strait.
