Media watchdogs call for probe into murder of journalist

Somali media watchdogs have condemned the murder of local journalist on the outskirts of Somali capital, Mogadishu.

AbdiweliA Hassan aka Abdiwali Onine was fatally shot in Afgoye town, 30KM south of Mogadishu, on Sunday evening after unidentified gunmen attack him on his way to home.

In a separate statements Journalists Syndicate (SJS) and Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) have called for investigation into the murder of Abdiweli who was simultaneously working for UK based Somali TV and a local station in Mogadishu.

“This is indeed another sad day for Somali journalists. We call for the Somali Federal Government and the local authorities to carry out prompt investigations and bring the killers into the justice,” said the general sectary of SJS.

The General Secretary of FESOJ termed the deceased as committed journalist who was dedicated to serving the public by informing them the truth.

“We condemn the murder of Abdiweli Ali Hassan,” said the Secretary-General of FESOJ Mohamed Ibrahim Moalimuu.

Abdiwali was deeply committed journalist who remained dedicated to informing the public at great risk to himself over the years,” he said, “I call on the local authorities to investigate this crime and bring its perpetrators to justice, an essential step to improve the safety of journalists working in the area.”
