At least two soldiers have been killed and another was injured when al-Shabaab fighters attacked a security checkpoint in Lower Shabelle region.
According to local authorities who spoke the media, the soldiers died after armed al-Shabaab fighters raided a checkpoint in Awdhegle town.
Following brief gunfire between the sides, the assailants managed to escape from the scene.
The government forces have reached and launched operations to hunt down the perpetrators of the attack.
Meanwhile, in a statement posted on its affiliate online media, al-Shabaab claimed the responsibility for the attack saying its fighters took over the control of the checkpoint before vacating the area.
Al-Shabaab controls few small towns and village in southern Somalia but lethal attacks against SNA and AMISOM forces in the country.
The group stage IED explosions in the country’s major towns. In 2012, the lost the control of the city and several other towns following heavy clashes with SNA backed by African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
