Somalia’s ex-EU envoy elected as SW parliament speaker

Former Somali ambassador to the European Union Dr.Ali Said Faqi, has been elected as the new speaker of South West state parliament in Baidoa on Wednesday.

Ambassador Faqi is also a member of the regional parliament garnered 83 votes out of 93 casts while his close contender Hon. Mohamed Abdirahim Nur managed only two votes.

Eight votes were spoilt during the process.

He holds a doctor’s degree in Veterinary Medicine from the Somali National University, Diploma of Specialization in Experimental Pharmacology from the University of Milan (Italy) and a Ph.D. in Toxicology from the University of Leipzig.

Since June 2013, Dr. Ali S. Faqi served as the Ambassador of Somalia to Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg (Benelux) and EU. He served as a non-resident Ambassador to France and was the Representative of Somalia to UNESCO from 2014 to November 2016. H

He received several scientific and service awards from various institutions including an outstanding humanitarian award from the Independent Pan-African Youth Parliament (IPAYP) in 2018.
