The leader of Galmudug State in central Somalia, Ahmed Abdi Kariye has announced new plan to disarm militias in the region.
Speaking to the media while in Galkayo, Kariye said a major security operation to retrieve illegal firearms in region will begin soon.
This directive comes in the wake of escalating clashes between clan militias that have led to the deaths of more than 10 people in the past two weeks on the outskirts of Galkayo town.
“We are giving the priority to the stabilisation of this region, in Galmudug, we will recover all illegal arms in the different hand,” he said.
He called on militias in possession of illegal firearms to ensure to surrender the weapons during the disarmament operations.
The leader pledged that his government will transform the militias to be regional forces.
He said the regional state had put in place strategies to ensure peace prevailed in all Galmudug areas.
