Somalia and Italian Intelligence chiefs discuss boosting cooperation

The Director of Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency NISA, Fahad Yassin, met with his Italian counterpart, General Giovanni Caravelli in Mogadishu.

General Caravelli and his team arrived in the Somali capital on Tuesday.

The talks focused on ways to strengthen security co-operation between the two agencies NISA and AISE.

Somali spy agency played a key role in the release of Italian aid worker Silvia Romano in May.

She was abducted by the armed group al-Shabaab from the Kenyan coastal town of Lamu in November 2018.

Joint security operation led by Somali spy agency assisted by Turkish and Italian granted her freedom near the agricultural town of Afgoye in Lower Shabelle region.

The Italian government has since thanked its Somali counterpart for the rescue operation following Mrs. Romano’s reunification with her family five months ago.
