Somalia steps up war against human trafficking

Somalia has stepped up operations to fight against human trafficking despite lack of law to combat against human trafficking.

The Director General of Immigration and Naturalization department of Somalia Mohamed Aden Kofi said the agency had dismantled an organized human trafficking network in the country last year.

The director said they recorded 479 cases of illegal immigration and people being trafficked since early last year.

According to Kofi, number of human traffickers who were arrested during operations by the agency were taken to court with some of them convicted of their crimes.

He said the agency was aware of the arrest of number of Somali nationals who were arrested for involvement in human trafficking in foreign countries.

“The agency succeeded to dismantle number of human traffick networks in and outside the country. With help of foreign partners and security agencies, several of human traffickers were arrested in and outside the country,” he said.
